Nvidia unveils zero‑water cooling system for AI data centers

Nvidia introduced a closed‑loop liquid‑cooling solution that eliminates direct water consumption in AI data‑center operations. The system circulates a mixture of water and propylene glycol through cold plates attached to processors, capturing heat at the source and rejecting it via external radiators, allowing continuous reuse of the same coolant. By operating at temperatures up to 45 °C, the design can run without evaporative cooling, cutting water use to near zero and reducing electricity dedicated to cooling, which traditionally accounts for up to 40 % of a data‑center’s power draw. Nvidia estimates that a 50 MW facility could save over $4 million annually in energy and water costs, with potential waste‑heat recovery benefits. The overall environmental impact will still depend on the source of electricity powering the facilities, with greater gains in regions using renewable energy.
