Nvidia updates ray tracing tech as Witcher 3 sets high GPU requirements

Nvidia has updated its ray tracing technology with the release of RTX Mega Geometry 2.0. This system is designed to handle increasingly complex 3D models by dividing geometries into smaller clusters. The update introduces Cluster Level of Detail (LOD), which allows the system to load different levels of detail based on the scene's needs. This prevents the need to keep massive amounts of geometric data permanently in VRAM, enabling denser geometry in ray-traced environments. The technology is expected to be featured in Gears of War: E-Day.

Separately, CD Projekt RED has revealed the system requirements for The Witcher 3: Wild Hunt – Remastered. To run the game at 4K resolution and 60 fps with Path Tracing enabled, the recommended hardware includes an Nvidia GeForce RTX 5080 (16 GB), a high-end processor such as an Intel Core i9-13900K or AMD Ryzen 7 9800X3D, and 24 GB of RAM. These extreme specifications utilize upscaling and Frame Generation technologies to manage the heavy computational load of Path Tracing.
