SpaceX and NVIDIA partner to launch orbital AI supercomputers

SpaceX and NVIDIA have announced a partnership to extend AI computing from terrestrial data centers into orbit. The collaboration involves deploying NVIDIA’s Vera Rubin platform to power SpaceXAI’s next generation of agentic AI workloads.

Key components of the plan include the launch of the first-generation Starmind AI satellite, which will feature a space-optimized NVIDIA Vera Rubin NVL72 system. This initial mission is targeted for the fourth quarter of 2027, with plans for significant orbital deployment and scale by 2028. Elon Musk noted that the space-optimized design is intended to be simpler, lower cost, denser, and lighter than traditional terrestrial computing racks.

SpaceXAI is scaling its infrastructure toward massive computing capacities, aiming for over 2 gigawatts by the end of 2026 and approximately 10 gigawatts by late 2027. The NVIDIA Vera CPU, specifically designed for agentic AI, will handle intensive tasks such as tool orchestration, code execution, and data processing to ensure high-performance AI agents can act in real time while keeping GPUs fully utilized.
