Nvidia's strategic interest in CoreWeave amid rising debt concerns

CoreWeave, an AI cloud provider partially owned by Nvidia, is facing market instability due to concerns regarding its debt levels. The company's stock has reportedly fallen by approximately one-third over the last month, and its bonds have faced significant pressure, with interest rates reaching double digits.

CoreWeave’s business model involves securing long-term computing power contracts with well-funded tech firms to use as collateral for loans to fund data center expansion. While this high level of indebtedness has raised alarms about potential risks within the AI sector, JP Morgan has assessed that the risks to global banks remain limited.

Nvidia holds a strategic interest in CoreWeave, owning roughly 10 percent of the company. Because CoreWeave serves as a major customer for Nvidia’s AI chips and provides an alternative customer base to hyperscalers like Amazon and Microsoft—who are developing their own chips—Nvidia has a strong incentive to see the company succeed. Although Nvidia has made no formal commitment to a bailout, the intertwined interests of the two companies mean a financial crisis at CoreWeave could impact Nvidia.
