NWSL playoff and Shield races intensify during penultimate weekend
The National Women's Soccer League (NWSL) enters its penultimate weekend of regular-season play, with five of the eight playoff spots, home-field advantage, and the NWSL Shield all at stake.
Defending champions Gotham FC currently hold first place with 55 points but face significant injury challenges. The club will play Sunday against Orlando Pride without leading scorers Jaedyn Shaw (knee) and Rose Lavelle (neck), following previous season-ending injuries to Bruninha and Jordyn Dudley. To clinch the NWSL Shield on Sunday, Gotham must win while hoping San Diego Wave and Washington Spirit fail to overtake them.
Other critical matchups include:
• Seattle Reign vs. Utah Royals: Seattle is fighting for the final eighth playoff spot. • North Carolina Courage vs. Portland Thorns: North Carolina needs a win to keep playoff hopes alive. • Washington Spirit vs. Kansas City Current: A battle between the No. 3 and No. 4 seeds, where a Kansas City win or draw could secure their postseason berth.
