Mayor Zohran Mamdani launches 30% discount at NYC municipal grocery stores

Mayor Zohran Mamdani announced a plan to open five city‑owned grocery stores—one in each borough—offering a permanent 30 % discount on a core basket of essential foods. The discounted items include fresh produce, meat, seafood and roughly 20 categories of pantry staples such as eggs, milk, cheese, rice and beans. Prices will be set at the start of each month and will not fluctuate weekly, and the discount will apply to all shoppers regardless of income.

The administration projects that the program will cut an average household’s grocery bill by about $90 a month, or roughly $1,000 a year, representing a 15 % reduction in food spending for the city’s more than 40 % of families who struggle to afford groceries. The first store is slated to open at Hunts Point in the Bronx by the end of 2027, followed by a location at La Marqueta in East Harlem by 2029, with additional sites in Queens, Brooklyn and Staten Island to be identified later. The city has earmarked $70 million for construction and will own or lease the properties, while private operators selected through a request for proposals will handle day‑to‑day management. Critics from small‑business groups warn the stores could undercut local bodegas, but officials say the stores will not sell hot prepared foods or other high‑margin items to avoid direct competition.
