Nyankpala residents petition for faster probe into 2024 election violence
Residents of Nyankpala in the Tolon District have petitioned the Ghanaian Presidency, the Ministry of the Interior, the Ghana Police Service, and the Attorney-General's Department to expedite the investigation into election-day violence that occurred on December 7, 2024.
The violence resulted in the death of Shaibu Haruna, also known as Alhaji, and left several other residents injured. Nearly two years after the incident, the Concerned NDC Youth in the Nyankpala Zone expressed fears that the slow pace of the inquiry threatens the preservation of evidence and the ability of witnesses to accurately recall events.
During a news conference, spokesperson Alhassan Alhassan also raised questions regarding a suspect description provided by Interior Minister Mohammed Mubarak Muntaka during an August 2026 briefing. The group requested that authorities review the description against official records to ensure accuracy and called for the investigation to be conducted with urgency, professionalism, and fairness.
