NYC DOT announces 20 Gridlock Alert Days for 2026

The New York City Department of Transportation (NYC DOT) has released a schedule of 20 Gridlock Alert Days for 2026, identifying dates when extraordinary traffic congestion is expected in Manhattan.

A significant period of disruption is scheduled from September 21 to September 25, coinciding with the United Nations General Assembly. During this week, international delegations, official motorcades, and heightened security measures are expected to cause major street closures and circulation restrictions. In Midtown, average vehicle speeds could drop to between 4 and 6 miles per hour.

Additional alerts are scheduled for November 18 and 19, as well as November 24, ahead of the Thanksgiving holiday. Other congestion is expected during the November and December holiday shopping and tourism seasons. Authorities recommend that commuters and drivers plan ahead and utilize public transportation, such as the subway or buses, to avoid significant delays.
