NYC Mayor Zohran Mamdani Faces Privacy and Voter‑Roll Controversies

Mayor Zohran Mamdani’s administration has drawn criticism on two fronts. The New York City Department of Finance released a searchable online database identifying more than 31,000 properties that could be subject to a new pied‑à‑terre tax aimed at high‑value second homes. Critics say the list, which includes owners’ names and addresses, invades privacy and contains numerous inaccuracies, such as modest homes in the Bronx and Staten Island that do not meet the tax’s value thresholds. City Council Minority Leader David Carr called the release “reckless,” noting his own primary residence appeared on the list.

Separately, a private audit conducted by election‑integrity activist Marly Hornik flagged 228,000 voter‑record anomalies in the 2025 mayoral election—more than the certified margin of victory for Mamdani. The audit highlighted unverifiable records, invalid Social Security numbers and entries for individuals outside city limits, but it did not prove illegal ballots. Officials stress that flagged records are not equivalent to fraud and that further independent review is needed.
