Benjamin Netanyahu says he'll attend UN in New York despite NYC mayor's arrest calls
Israeli Prime Minister Benjamin Netanyahu confirmed he will travel to New York in September to attend the United Nations General Assembly, saying he will “speak the truth” despite New York City Mayor Zohran Mamdani’s repeated calls to arrest him. Mamdani, who has labeled Netanyahu a “war criminal,” said the city has reviewed all legal avenues and concluded it lacks the authority to enforce the International Criminal Court (ICC) arrest warrant issued in November 2024 for war crimes and crimes against humanity related to Israel’s Gaza offensive.
Netanyahu accused Mamdani of fomenting hate, likening his rhetoric to that of the 1930s, and warned that the mayor’s statements are turning New Yorkers against the city’s Jewish community. He reiterated his intention to attend the UN meeting and dismissed any threat of arrest, noting that the United States does not recognise ICC jurisdiction. President Donald Trump also said Netanyahu would not be arrested while in the United States.
The ICC warrant alleges more than 73,000 Palestinian deaths in Gaza since October 2023. Mamdani has called on federal authorities to act, stating that only the U.S. government could legally enforce the warrant.
