NYC officials urge NYU Langone to save AMC Kips Bay 15 theater
New York City elected officials are calling on NYU Langone Health to preserve the AMC Kips Bay 15 IMAX theater following news of its impending closure. A coalition of lawmakers, including Assemblymember Keith Powers, Manhattan Borough President Brad Hoylman-Sigal, and U.S. Representative Jerry Nadler, sent a letter to the healthcare provider requesting a dialogue regarding the future of the site.
AMC announced the 15-screen theater will close at the end of the year after the property owner exercised a contractual right to terminate the lease early. NYU Langone purchased the property, which also includes a Fairway supermarket, approximately one year ago but has not publicly disclosed its development plans for the site.
Local representatives criticized the health system for failing to notify community offices about the acquisition and for keeping residents uninformed about planned developments. The officials are urging NYU Langone to allow the theater and supermarket to continue operating and to submit any land-use or rezoning proposals for public review.
