NYC Parks Department: Tree limb that injured vendor was recently inspected
A tree limb fell on a hot dog vendor near the American Museum of Natural History in New York City on September 11. The incident occurred at a Nathan’s Hot Dog cart in Theodore Roosevelt Park.
The NYC Parks Department stated that the pin oak tree involved had been inspected in early September, and no visual defects or needs for further inspection were identified at that time. The tree was last pruned in October 2017.
Data from the Parks Department indicates that the number of tree inspections conducted by the city decreased by 33%, falling from 88,000 in fiscal year 2025 to 59,000 in fiscal year 2026.
The FDNY transported the victim to Lenox Hill Hospital. While authorities have not released the victim's name or the extent of their injuries, fellow vendors reported the individual was recuperating at home.
