NYC subway crime spikes in all boroughs as overall city crime falls 1%

Major crimes on New York City subways and buses have risen sharply in most boroughs this year while the citywide total crime count slipped about 1% to 1,085 incidents. The Bronx North Patrol Borough saw a 32% increase, Manhattan North 25%, Bronx South 17%, Brooklyn South 16%, and Queens South 3%. Felonious assaults on transit are up 4% to 330 and robberies up 10% to 216, with transit‑related crimes climbing 21% in five precincts (428 vs 351 previously). Police Commissioner Jessica Tisch noted the surge, highlighted a record 39 firearms recovered in transit, and said arrests for robbery and assault rose 10% and 9% respectively. She attributed much of the increase to offenders under 18, some as young as 12‑13. Subway ridership is up 5% from last year. A high‑profile incident involved a 24‑year‑old man slashed in the face at the Fordham Road station.
