NYC teacher Maysa Jarara faces scrutiny over antisemitic memes
Maysa Jarara, a math teacher at Park Slope Collegiate in Brooklyn, is facing scrutiny after posting antisemitic content on social media. On July 19, Jarara shared a Facebook image of soccer star Lionel Messi that utilized caricatures resembling the 'Happy Merchant' meme, depicting him with an exaggerated nose and wearing a yarmulke.
United Jewish Teachers President Moshe Spern criticized the post, stating that Jarara crossed a line by using tropes that cast Jewish people as greedy and scheming. Additionally, the New York City Public Schools Alliance President, Karen Feldman, described the teacher's history of sharing inflammatory and biased posts as 'deeply disturbing.'
Reports indicate that Jarara has a history of posting anti-Israel content, including images of the Israeli flag covered in blood and an Instagram illustration posted on the anniversary of the October 7 attacks featuring individuals in front of a burning pile.
