Nye County deputies arrested in death of woman during overdose

Two Nye County deputies, Kyle D. Benes and Carlos A. Luna, have been arrested on suspicion of involuntary manslaughter, inhumanity to a prisoner, and neglect of duty following the death of Stevie Miller.

Miller, 30, died at Desert View Hospital on June 10 from a methamphetamine and fentanyl overdose. According to arrest affidavits, Miller was being held at the Nye County jail after a high-speed pursuit and vehicle collision. Police records indicate that deputies failed to call for medical assistance while Miller suffered for hours in custody.

The affidavits state that Deputy Luna was watching YouTube videos and texting on his phone while Miller was ailing. Luna reportedly made several derogatory comments regarding Miller and requested that an inmate worker close a jail door to block out the sound of her groaning.
