Nyergesújfalu hosts annual grave-digging competition in Hungary

The Hungarian Association of Cemetery Maintainers and Operators held its ninth annual grave-digging competition in the public cemetery of Nyergesújfalu. The event featured 19 two-man teams, totaling 38 competitors, who used picks and shovels to race for titles of speed and style.

Participants faced difficult conditions due to dry, summer-baked soil. The competition aimed to showcase the physical demands and professional skills required for the trade while working to reduce social taboos surrounding death.

Róbert Nagy and his teammate László Kiss won the contest with a time of 1 hour and 21 minutes. They dug a grave to specific dimensions: 1.6 meters deep, 2 meters long, and 0.8 meters wide. The winning pair shared a cash prize of 200,000 Hungarian forints, approximately $640.
