Nyesom Wike to lead Tinubu’s 2027 re-election campaign

Nigeria's political landscape is seeing early mobilization for the 2027 general elections, marked by significant internal friction within the ruling All Progressives Congress (APC). FCT Minister Nyesom Wike, a member of the opposition Peoples Democratic Party (PDP), has announced plans to lead President Bola Tinubu’s re-election campaign in both the Federal Capital Territory and Rivers State.

Wike is promoting the ‘Rainbow Coalition,’ a multi-party platform intended to support Tinubu’s presidential bid while allowing participants to remain in their respective parties for other elective positions. This approach has drawn sharp criticism from several APC governors, including Zamfara Governor Dauda Lawal, who has demanded that Wike clarify his political allegiance, arguing that one cannot simultaneously support the APC and other political parties.

Other political figures have also weighed in. Minister of Works David Umahi stated that the Rainbow Coalition does not exist in Ebonyi State, while the NDDC Managing Director, Samuel Ogbuku, noted that the Ijaw people have resolved to support Tinubu’s second term. Meanwhile, Wike maintains that the administration’s infrastructure projects in Abuja will serve as a primary driver for voter support in the upcoming elections.
