Nyesom Wike and Rotimi Amaechi clash over Rivers State politics

Political tensions in Nigeria have escalated between Federal Capital Territory (FCT) Minister Nyesom Wike and Rotimi Amaechi, the vice-presidential candidate for the African Democratic Congress (ADC). Wike has accused Amaechi of looting the Rivers State treasury and mismanaging funds, specifically citing a $39 million project and a $10 million fumigation effort. Wike further warned that Amaechi would face significant difficulties campaigning in Rivers State if he continues to criticize President Bola Tinubu and his supporters.

The ADC has responded by stating that Wike has no legal or moral authority to prevent Amaechi from campaigning. The party challenged Wike to present evidence of financial crimes to appropriate authorities rather than making allegations in the media. Meanwhile, Amaechi has urged ADC members to move past internal primary disputes and focus on winning upcoming elections, noting that incumbent governments often underestimate the ability of opposition forces to unseat them.

Separately, Amnesty International Nigeria has called on Minister Wike to suspend planned demolitions in Maitama, Abuja. The organization expressed concerns that developing Plot 5334 for private real estate could compromise critical public drainage infrastructure and increase flooding risks in the area.
