Nynäshamn proposes 90-day guarantee to combat youth unemployment

In Nynäshamn, Sweden, the Social Democrats have proposed a 90-day guarantee for young people to combat rising youth unemployment. Statistics from June indicate that unemployment among 18–24-year-olds in the municipality reached 10.7 percent, a one percent increase from the previous year.

The proposed initiative aims to provide immediate support to young people who are neither working nor studying. Within 90 days, individuals would receive an individualized plan involving practical training, vocational education, job matching, or labor market employment. The goal is to coordinate efforts between the municipality, local businesses, schools, and the Swedish Public Employment Service.

On a national level, discussions regarding Swedish youth unemployment present a complex picture. While the unemployment rate for the 15–24 age group is approximately 24 percent—the second highest in the EU—Sweden remains among the top performers in Europe for keeping young people engaged in either employment or education. The country is currently on track to meet EU targets for 2030, with a low percentage of young people being completely outside of both the workforce and the education system.
