Nyénye, a lost medieval Hungarian village, rediscovered by archaeologists

Archaeologists from the Damjanich János Museum have located the remains of Nyénye, a medieval village in Hungary that was previously known only through historical records. The discovery was made during excavations near Shandaszőlős, close to the city of Szolnok.

Researchers identified the site by correlating physical findings with medieval documents, including property dispute records. The village had not appeared in written records since 1548. Excavations revealed 15th and 16th-century ceramics, pits, and trenches indicating former habitation.

A significant part of the find includes the remains of a church and an adjacent cemetery. The graves were found arranged on an east-west axis, consistent with Christian burial practices. The presence of a cemetery and building debris has allowed researchers to pinpoint the likely location of the former settlement.
