Manhattan manhole incident prompts NYPD investigation into suspected sewer scavengers

The NYPD is investigating a recent incident in which three individuals wearing work overalls and headlamps were filmed emerging from a manhole near Penn Station in Manhattan. The footage, which circulated on social media, shows the group exiting the underground infrastructure around 4 a.m. on August 18 near the intersection of 32nd Street and Seventh Avenue.

Detectives believe these individuals may be “scavengers” searching the city’s extensive sewer network for valuables such as jewelry or lost wallets. This follows similar sightings in Brooklyn areas like Williamsburg and Gravesend earlier this year. While investigators have identified individuals in previous cases, no arrests have been made regarding the Penn Station incident.

The New York City Department of Environmental Protection (DEP) has conducted inspections and reported no damage to the city’s wastewater and stormwater infrastructure. However, officials have issued warnings that entering the sewer system is illegal and extremely hazardous due to risks of toxic gases, flooding, and unstable surfaces.
