NYPD K9 Mahmoud returns to active duty to honor deceased handler

NYPD K9 Mahmoud Kirk Boone Belgian Malinois police dogs

Mahmoud, an 8-year-old Belgian Malinois, has become the first NYPD K9 to be brought back from retirement. The dog had been retired for approximately two months following the retirement of his handler, Detective Kirk Boone.

Detective Boone passed away from natural causes in July, shortly after his retirement. At the request of Boone’s family, the NYPD reinstated Mahmoud to service to honor the detective’s legacy. Mahmoud has been reassigned to Detective Jeremy Lucca, who began working with the dog in August.

Mahmoud, a cadaver and drug detection dog, is currently undergoing training to certify in additional specialties, including search and rescue. Since his return to duty, the K9 has provided coverage for major events, including the US Open and the United Nations General Assembly.
