NYPD officer accidentally shoots himself in Bronx home

An off-duty NYPD officer, identified by family as Demitrious Caceres, accidentally shot himself in the leg on Tuesday afternoon at his home in the Kingsbridge neighborhood of the Bronx.

According to his brother, Jonathan, the 33-year-old officer was attempting to place his firearm into its holster while preparing to leave his residence on Bailey Avenue when the weapon discharged. Caceres, who has been with the NYPD since January 2023 and is assigned to the 1st Precinct, was found conscious and alert by authorities.

Emergency medical services transported Caceres to Jacobi Medical Center, where he was listed in stable condition. Police stated that officers in New York City are required to carry firearms even while off duty. An investigation into the incident is ongoing.
