NYPD officer promoted to sergeant following family loss on 9/11

Joseph Vigiano Jr., 33, was promoted to the rank of sergeant within the NYPD during a ceremony at 1 Police Plaza. The promotion carries significant family weight, occurring nearly 25 years after his father and uncle were killed during the September 11 attacks.

His father, Joseph Vigiano Sr., was a highly decorated NYPD Emergency Service Unit detective who was among the first responders to enter the World Trade Center complex on 9/11. The elder Vigiano was a recipient of the American Legion Police Post No. 460 Medal for Valor and had survived two previous on-duty shootings.

Since becoming a detective, Vigiano Jr. has carried his father’s shield number, 4511. NYPD Commissioner Jessica Tisch honored the family's continued commitment to public service during the ceremony, noting that despite their personal losses, the family has continued to answer the call to serve.
