NYPD Officer Rebecca De Paula Dies in Dominican Republic After Surgery Complications
Rebecca De Paula, a 31‑year‑old New York Police Department officer, joined the force in January 2025 and served the Bronx’s 46th Precinct. She was named Officer of the Month in March and was also a Christian pastor with three children.
In August 2026 she traveled to Santo Domingo, Dominican Republic, for a breast‑implant removal surgery. After the procedure she developed a bacterial infection that led to her death. The Dominican National Institute of Forensic Sciences held her remains pending autopsy, and her family plans to repatriate her body to the United States.
Police Benevolent Association President Patrick Hendry asked New Yorkers to keep her family in their prayers, describing her as a “bright future” and “beautiful soul.” The incident has prompted condolences from NYPD colleagues and community members.
