NYPD rededicates memorial for ESU officers killed on 9/11

The NYPD has rededicated a refurbished memorial wall at the Emergency Service Unit (ESU) training center at Floyd Bennett Field in Brooklyn. The memorial honors 45 ESU members who were killed in the line of duty, including 14 officers who died during the September 11, 2001, terrorist attacks.

As part of the tribute, the department displayed the service weapon of Police Officer John D’Allara, which was recovered from the rubble at Ground Zero. The memorial also includes photographs and nameplates for the fallen officers and recognizes those who died later from 9/11-related illnesses.

NYPD Commissioner Jessica Tisch described the ESU officers as “the tip of the NYPD’s spear,” noting their role in entering the damaged Twin Towers to rescue civilians and fellow responders. The rededication comes ahead of the 25th anniversary of the attacks.
