NYPD to use independent drone mitigation at US Open

The NYPD has announced it will use new independent legal authority to conduct drone mitigation operations at the upcoming US Open in New York City. This marks the first time in the United States that state or local law enforcement will conduct such operations independently at a major event.

This authority stems from the federal Safer Skies Act, which was passed by Congress in December and took effect in July. Under this law, law enforcement agencies must use personnel trained and certified by federal authorities to utilize drone mitigation technology. The NYPD intends to use its own personnel, tools, and equipment to electronically neutralize unauthorized drones.

While no specific, credible threats have been identified, the NYPD will deploy a massive security presence at the USTA Billie Jean King National Tennis Center, including the bomb squad, aviation, and emergency services units. Previously, the federal government held sole authority for drone mitigation during major local events.
