NYU Abu Dhabi develops biodegradable 3D-printed gastric stent

Researchers at NYU Abu Dhabi have developed a biodegradable, 3D-printed gastric stent named BRIDGE (Biodegradable aRchitected Internal DrainaGE) to treat gastric leaks. These leaks are a serious complication that can occur following bariatric or weight-loss surgery, potentially leading to infection and extended hospital stays.

The device utilizes an advanced internal lattice structure created through 3D printing to improve flexibility and fluid drainage. Laboratory testing indicates that the BRIDGE stent can achieve up to twice the drainage performance of conventional stents and can withstand bends more than seven times tighter without kinking. This design is intended to maintain effective drainage even in patients with complex anatomical conditions.

Because the stent is made from biodegradable materials, it may break down naturally after the leak has healed, potentially eliminating the need for a secondary medical procedure to remove the device. The study's findings were published in the journal Device.
