NYU Langone Health study finds no link between prenatal pesticide exposure and autism

A study conducted by researchers at NYU Langone Health suggests that prenatal exposure to organophosphate pesticides is not significantly linked to social communication problems or other traits associated with autism. The findings, published in the journal JAMA Pediatrics, analyzed data from mother-child pairs to measure pesticide levels during pregnancy.

While organophosphates—insecticides designed to target the nervous systems of insects—have been previously linked to neurodevelopmental risks such as lower IQ, cognitive difficulties, and ADHD, this research found no significant correlation between these specific chemical exposures and autism-related traits.

Experts cautioned that these results do not guarantee the safety of such pesticides, nor do they rule out risks at higher exposure levels or in more vulnerable populations. The research team plans to conduct further long-term studies to investigate other environmental factors, including microplastics and different types of pesticides, and how they may interact with genetic predispositions.
