OpenAI claims solution to Navier-Stokes Millennium Prize problem

OpenAI has announced that its internal artificial intelligence system has achieved a breakthrough by solving key aspects of the Navier-Stokes existence and smoothness problem, one of the seven Millennium Prize Problems. The company reported that approximately 10,000 autonomous AI agents worked for 88 hours to generate the proof, which was subsequently formalized using the Lean programming language. The computing effort is estimated to have cost millions of dollars.

The announcement has sparked significant controversy within the mathematical community. Tristan Buckmaster, a professor at New York University, and Levent Alpöge from Anthropic have raised concerns regarding the timing of OpenAI's research. Buckmaster alleges that OpenAI may have gained access to or been influenced by their ongoing research into related fluid dynamics problems. While OpenAI has denied directly using specific researcher data or private drafts, the company acknowledged that general usage patterns from its products could have potentially aided model improvement.

Although the solution addresses critical components of the Millennium Prize requirements, it has not yet been independently verified or officially accepted by the Clay Mathematics Institute. OpenAI has stated it does not intend to claim the $1 million prize, focusing instead on demonstrating the rapid advancement of AI in solving complex, high-level mathematical challenges.
