NYU Student Alexander Stepnowsky Charged in Hate‑Crime Flag Incident

Alexander Stepnowsky, a 23‑year‑old New York University student from Connecticut, was arrested after raising a banner bearing two swastikas alongside a Star of David on an NYU building named for a Jewish donor during the university's May 2026 graduation festivities. Prosecutors allege the flag was designed to resemble NYU's official colors and logo. Stepnowsky has been charged with burglary, criminal trespass as a hate crime, and first‑degree aggravated harassment. He pleaded not guilty at a preliminary Manhattan court hearing on August 4, 2026, was released on his own recognizance, and is scheduled to return to court in October. NYU officials said the incident is under investigation and that disciplinary actions, including possible expulsion, are being considered.
