NZZ editor-in-chief Eric Gujer to step down in 2027

Eric Gujer will step down as editor-in-chief of the NZZ on February 1, 2027, after leading the publication since 2015. He will remain with the Zurich-based media group as the publisher for Germany, where he intends to focus on major German and international political trends and strengthen the NZZ’s presence. Gujer, who has been with the NZZ for 40 years, will also lead the ‘NZZ Podium’ event series and continue to oversee the ‘NZZ Standpunkte’ program on SRF.

The NZZ aims to fill the editor-in-chief position by the end of 2026, considering both internal and external candidates. A final decision is expected in the fourth quarter of 2026.

Regarding financial performance, the NZZ reported an operating income of 109 million Swiss francs for the first half of the year, a 7 percent decrease compared to the previous year. This decline was attributed to the sale of the Zurich Film Festival and structural declines in the print business. The group reported a net loss of 3.4 million Swiss francs, partly due to a one-time accounting effect from the sale of its remaining stake in CH Media, compared to a profit of 6.9 million Swiss francs in the first half of 2025.
