O Porriño Mayor officiates 500th civil wedding

Alejandro Lorenzo, the mayor of O Porriño, has officiated his 500th civil wedding. The milestone was reached following a ceremony for a couple named María and Gabriel.

Since taking office in 2022, Lorenzo has presided over numerous ceremonies in various locations, including restaurants, private estates, and the San Luis Templete. He also noted a particularly moving ceremony held in a hospital room at Povisa to fulfill the final wish of a dying mother.

The increase in the number of ceremonies is partially attributed to a 2022 municipal decision to abolish the 100-euro fee for officiating civil weddings. Lorenzo stated, “We do not believe there should be fees for formalizing love,” highlighting the goal of making the service more accessible to all couples.
