O Porriño to replace food bank with supermarket family cards
The municipality of O Porriño has announced plans to replace its municipal food bank with a 'family card' system. This new measure, presented by Mayor Alejandro Lorenzo as part of the 2026 municipal budget project, aims to transform the local food assistance model.
Under the new system, managed by municipal social services, beneficiaries will no longer receive predetermined batches of food products. Instead, they will use the card to purchase essential items directly at supermarkets. The initiative is designed to reduce the social stigma associated with food aid and eliminate 'poverty queues' by allowing families to shop like any other consumer.
