O Porriño to Restore Roman Bridge As Amíndoas and Create Flood‑Resilient River Park

The municipality of O Porriño in Galicia is launching an ambitious heritage and environmental project to recover the Roman bridge known as As Amíndoas, which is currently concealed beneath concrete and asphalt. The bridge will be restored to its original appearance and reopened as a pedestrian walkway, while a new parallel road will carry vehicular traffic.

The works also aim to increase the drainage capacity of the River Louro to lower flood risk that regularly affects the area. The upgraded river corridor will be transformed into a large fluvial park with direct river access and a new footbridge linking the Torneiros neighbourhood with the town centre. The initiative, part of the Integrated Action Plan (PAI) and funded by EU FEDER resources, also seeks to locate and restore sections of the ancient Roman road that once connected O Porriño with As Gándaras, Pontellas and the historic route between Astorga and Braga. Mayor Alejandro Lorenzo highlighted the project as one of the most important and inspiring for the town, combining cultural preservation with climate‑adaptation solutions.
