O2 launches direct-to-device satellite connectivity for UK businesses

O2 Business has launched a direct-to-device satellite connectivity service for its business customers, making it the first mobile operator in the United Kingdom to offer such a proposition. The service utilizes SpaceX’s Starlink low-Earth orbit (LEO) satellite constellation to provide mobile data and connectivity in areas where traditional terrestrial networks are unavailable, such as rural roads, construction sites, and remote farms.

The technology allows compatible smartphones from Apple, Google, and Samsung to connect directly to satellites without the need for specialized hardware, dishes, or dedicated applications. This integration has expanded O2’s UK landmass coverage from 89% to 95%.

Initial service capabilities include text messaging and limited data transmission for specific applications, including WhatsApp, Messenger, Google Maps, Apple Maps, location sharing, and weather services. For business clients, the service is included in Ultimate Business Plans or available as a monthly bolt-on for Classic and Plus plans.
