OAB President withdraws petition regarding Prosecutor General

Beto Simonetti, president of the Brazilian Bar Association (OAB), has withdrawn a petition to the Supreme Federal Court (STF) regarding the status of Prosecutor General Paulo Gonet. The decision follows internal friction between Simonetti and state-level OAB presidents. While some state leaders argued that Gonet should be removed from investigating the ‘Master case’ due to his mention in police reports, Simonetti defended Gonet’s integrity and expressed support for the prosecutor.

Separately, the OAB Federal Council has declined to immediately debate the removal of Supreme Court Justice Alexandre de Moraes. The request, made by counselor Marcelo Tostes, follows allegations regarding a contract between Banco Master and the law firm of Moraes’s wife. Simonetti ruled that the matter will be addressed only after a newly created OAB commission completes its report. The OAB stated it is monitoring the situation with ‘attention and extreme concern,’ emphasizing the need for due process and the presumption of innocence.
