OAB-SP proposes judicial reforms for Brazil's Supreme Court

The São Paulo section of the Brazilian Bar Association (OAB-SP) has concluded a proposal aimed at addressing a credibility crisis within the justice system. The 77-page document suggests implementing fixed 12-year terms for ministers of the Supreme Federal Court (STF) and raising the minimum age for entry into the high courts from 35 to 50 years.

The proposal, led by OAB-SP President Leonardo Sica, seeks to combat perceived deficits in integrity and transparency. Key recommendations include the adoption of a formal code of conduct for STF ministers to regulate issues such as monocratic decisions, remuneration controversies, and unregulated conflicts of interest.

Additional suggested restrictions include prohibitions on political-party manifestations, the use of private jets, and the exploitation of educational institutions by court members. The proposal also calls for strict rules regarding the adjudication of cases involving the relatives of ministers.
