OAB/SC to debate Senate candidates on combating cybercrime
The Brazilian Bar Association of Santa Catarina (OAB/SC) is hosting a debate with Senate candidates to address the rise of virtual crimes. The initiative follows a recent incident where a cancer patient in Santa Catarina was targeted by a ‘fake lawyer scam,’ where criminals used legal process information to solicit fraudulent payments.
During the debate, scheduled for September 1st in Florianópolis, the OAB/SC will present a commitment letter to candidates. The organization is seeking legislative support for three primary measures: the rapid removal of fake profiles by digital platforms, harsher penalties for cybercrimes, and mandatory user certification by platforms to ensure real identities, with platforms facing accountability for failures.
