Denmark intensifies fight against oak procession spider infestations

The oak procession spider, known locally as the “larve fra helvede,” has spread across parts of Funen and now threatens residents and pets in Odense and surrounding areas. Health authorities warn that the spider’s hairs can cause severe allergic reactions, skin irritation, and respiratory problems in humans and dogs.

The Danish Ministry of Nature and Animal Welfare, together with the Health and Church Ministry and the Environment Ministry, announced a coordinated effort to support affected municipalities. Minister Christian Rabjerg Madsen said the ministries are providing immediate assistance, guidance and long‑term solutions, while planning an evaluation after the summer.
