Oak Processionary Moth Leads to Closure of Berlin Sports Facilities

In Berlin’s Mitte district, a massive infestation of the oak processionary moth (Eichenprozessionsspinner) has prompted the district sports office to temporarily shut down several venues: the Stadion Rehberge on Afrikanische Straße, the Gustav‑Böß‑Sportanlage on Koloniestraße, and the Stade Napoleon on Allee du Stade in Reinickendorf. The moth’s larvae carry fine, toxic hairs that can cause skin irritation, itching, respiratory problems, allergic reactions and flu‑like symptoms. The district monitors about 7,300 oaks on its property and removes larvae and nests from sensitive areas such as playgrounds and sports fields using suction, adhesive strips, hot water or hot foam. The facilities will remain closed until the environmental department declares them safe. District councilor Benjamin Fritz stressed that protecting the health of athletes is the top priority. All twelve Berlin districts report increasing moth infestations and have appealed to the state senate for coordinated action and funding; the estimated cost for 2025 is roughly €50,000.
