Oak Processionary Moth Outbreak Raises Health Alerts in Berlin and Bavaria

In Berlin’s Charlottenburg‑Nord district the oak processionary moth (Eichenprozessionsspinner) is spreading rapidly, with large infestations reported in the Jungfernheide park and surrounding street trees. The caterpillars’ urticating hairs can cause skin and eye irritation, respiratory problems and allergic reactions, especially for children, the elderly and people with pre‑existing conditions. The district authority has cordoned off affected areas but cannot remove the nests until the insects reach a later developmental stage, with treatment expected only from mid‑June.

Separately, a county specialist in Unterallgäu, Bavaria, warned gardeners about the same species and other hairy caterpillars, advising people to keep a safe distance from nests, wear protective clothing and leave control measures to professionals. He noted that many plants recover after feeding but emphasized the health hazards of the hairs. Both reports call for public caution and better preventive action.
