Oak processionary moth triggers rash warnings across German regions

Health officials in the Weißenburg-Gunzenhausen district of Germany have reported a rise in itchy skin rashes after outdoor activities. The symptoms are linked to contact with the stinging hairs of the oak processionary moth caterpillars, bites from grass mite larvae, and dermatitis from lake‑dwelling worm larvae known as Zerkarien. The health department advises the public to avoid infested oaks, wear long clothing, wash clothing at 60 °C, and shower after exposure.

In the town of Wertheim, the municipal government has contracted specialist firms to remove oak processionary moth nests from trees that pose a high risk to schools, kindergartens, hospitals, playgrounds and cemeteries. Affected trees are marked with warning tape at about one metre height. Limited financial and personnel resources mean that removal will not be carried out on all public green spaces, only on the priority sites. The city plans to intensify preventive measures next year as the caterpillars remain active until July. Citizens are urged to follow official warnings, stay away from marked trees, and seek medical help if severe reactions such as breathing difficulties occur.
