Black Panther Party marks 60th anniversary with Oakland celebrations
Oakland is hosting a series of events to commemorate the 60th anniversary of the founding of the Black Panther Party for Self-Defense. Established in 1966 by Huey P. Newton and Bobby Seale, the organization was formed to combat police brutality and address systemic injustices against Black communities.
While the party is often remembered for its militant stance and armed patrols, commemorations are highlighting its Community Survival Programs. These initiatives included free breakfast programs for children, health clinics, and educational resources. The legacy of these programs continues through organizations like the Carolyn Downs Family Medical Center in Seattle.
The anniversary celebrations in Oakland include a four-day conference, a gala, film screenings, and workshops. Additionally, the Oakland City Council recently voted to honoratively rename three blocks of Broadway as ‘Black Panther Party Boulevard’ to recognize the areas where members organized and distributed their newspaper.
