Oakland Estuary cleanup targets derelict vessels and crime

The City of Oakland and the Oakland Police Department have launched a major cleanup operation in the Oakland Estuary to remove sunken and derelict vessels. Lind Marine has begun the removal of 16 wrecks as part of a $3.16 million NOAA marine debris-removal grant. This follows a year in which more than 50 sunken, derelict, and surrendered vessels were already removed from the waterway.

The initiative is part of an enforcement strategy involving partnerships with the U.S. Coast Guard, California Fish and Wildlife, and the San Francisco Police Department. Officials noted that removing boats before they sink is critical, as underwater salvage costs approximately five times more than surface removal.

Local community members and organizations, such as the East Bay Rowing Club, have advocated for the cleanup to address long-standing issues including illegal anchor-outs, drug dealing, and human trafficking in the area. To support these efforts, the Oakland Police Department has increased its marine unit staffing from one officer to three.
