Oakland Institute report challenges transition mineral narrative

A recent report from the Oakland Institute challenges the narrative that a massive increase in the extraction of ‘transition minerals’ is strictly necessary for the global shift to renewable energy. While institutions such as the World Bank and UNCTAD suggest that mineral production must rise significantly—with the World Bank estimating a 500% increase by 2050—the report argues that much of this demand is driven by sectors unrelated to clean energy, such as artificial intelligence and military spending.

The report highlights that the push for increased mining carries significant environmental costs, including contaminated waterways, deforestation, and degraded air quality. It suggests that the current discourse may be misleading regarding how these minerals are actually utilized in the transition process.
