Oakland Unified School District faces federal civil rights complaint
The nonprofit organization Defending Education has filed a federal civil rights complaint against the Oakland Unified School District (OUSD). The complaint, submitted to the U.S. Department of Education’s Office for Civil Rights, alleges that the district discriminates based on race and sex through programs specifically targeting Latino youth and students of color.
Specific programs cited in the complaint include a Latino men and boys program, a Latinx mentoring and achievement program, and professional development initiatives designed to help preschool teachers support the development of boys of color. The group argues these initiatives, which may include tutoring, wellness programs, and food or housing benefits, violate Title VI, Title IX, and the Fourteenth Amendment’s Equal Protection Clause.
Defending Education, an Arlington, Virginia-based group founded in 2021, seeks a federal investigation into whether these equity-focused programs constitute illegal discrimination by excluding other student groups.
