Oando to pilot electricity from abandoned oil wells in Nigeria

Oando Energy Resources, a subsidiary of Oando Plc, announced a pilot project to generate electricity from abandoned oil wells in Nigeria using a geothermal‑style approach. The initiative, presented to Minister of Power Joseph Tegbe, aims to expand the country’s clean‑energy capacity and support the gas‑to‑power agenda. Managing Director Dr Ainojie Irune said the project will repurpose wells across the Oando Joint Venture and is part of the company’s broader clean‑energy strategy pursued through Oando Clean Energy. Oando already operates the 480‑megawatt Okpai Independent Power Plant, which supplies about 50 million Nigerians and roughly 15 % of the national grid. Irune emphasized that “Domestic capacity is not only an imperative now, but it is also the only way we get out of an economic crisis.” The minister welcomed the effort, reaffirming the government’s commitment to strengthening gas‑to‑power delivery.

The pilot reflects Oando’s focus on gas, solar, wind and hydro resources to provide reliable and affordable electricity across Africa.
