OAS to send international mission to observe Brazil elections

The Organization of American States (OAS) has announced it will send an international mission to observe Brazil's general elections in October. An agreement facilitating the entry of observers was signed in Washington by OAS Secretary-General Albert Ramdim and Brazil's representative, Benoni Belli.

This marks the fifth time the OAS has monitored Brazilian elections, having participated in the process since 2018. During the 2022 elections, the organization concluded that the proceedings were conducted with order and normality. The mission, led by former Chilean Foreign Minister and OAS Secretary-General José Miguel Insulza, will monitor various stages of the electoral process, including ballot preparation, voting, counting, vote totaling, and auditing mechanisms.

Observers will visit polling stations and meet with Brazilian authorities during both the first and second rounds of voting. The OAS mission joins other international delegations, including the European Union, the Mercosur Parliament (Parlasul), the Inter-American Union of Electoral Bodies (Uniore), the Arab League, and the Community of Portuguese Language Countries (CPLP), all of which have confirmed their intention to observe the elections.
