OAS to support Antigua and Barbuda in strengthening school democracy

The Organisation of American States (OAS) is partnering with the Ministry of Education, Science and Technology of Antigua and Barbuda to enhance democratic participation, responsible citizenship, and youth engagement within the national education system.

The initiative was launched following a consultation mission held on September 15-16, led by OAS Education Specialist Cecilia Martins. The project involves curriculum development experts, policymakers, and education professionals. Funded by the United States, the program will support a review of existing policies and curricula to identify priorities for future training and tool development.

Coordinated through the Democratic Education and Citizenship Programme (DEMEP), the initiative aims to implement Article 16 of the Inter-American Democratic Charter, which views education as a tool for strengthening democratic institutions and alleviating poverty. Minister of Education, Science and Technology Daryll Matthew stated the project reflects the government’s commitment to fostering informed citizenship among students.
